This is now my 4th year living in America. American Thanksgiving is different than Thanksgiving in Canada. People take it much more seriously here. At least in my personal / digital sphere. And it's a thing of beauty.
It is a good reminder.
To be grateful even for the "problems". I left some dirty exercise clothing lying on the floor - smelly, wet from sweat. My wife said tongue-in-cheek "I'm grateful you exercise, and it's better than beer cans. Now pick it up!"
I find gratitude a tough feeling to truly, beyond the words, appreciate. My tendency is to focus on problems, real or perceived, and in the absence of problems, to fear the potential / inevitability of problems.
Also, the guilt that while I have so much to be grateful for, there are others who are experiencing difficulties that we can only barely imagine. How one can feel gratitude without guilt is something of an internal battle for me.
With that said, there is the old proverb (it's not really a proverb): If you have the problem of car payments, be grateful for the car. If you have the problem or air conditioning repairs, be grateful you have an air conditioner. If you have a leaky roof, be grateful you have a roof.
Above all else, if you have your health, and that of your friends and family, you have everything in the world to be grateful for. Everything else is material.
Happy Thanksgiving.
Thank you all for being here. For being part of my live. And for being part of our journey to freedom.
