Flags at half mast

In Canada, the flags have been at half mast for five months or so now… To the point where no one notices and it means nothing anymore. The government plans to raise the flags, only to then re-lower them immediately. A sign of a nation in decline… https://www.ctvnews.ca/mobile/politics/feds-expected-to-announce-plans-to-raise-re-lower-flags-for-remembrance-day-1.5652596

Freedom of speech hanging on by a thread

The Supreme Court of Canada rendered its decision in the Mike Ward case. Ward is the standup comic who was fined $40,000 for making jokes about a disabled childhood celebrity. The decision was split, 5 to 4. Just reading the rationale and wording used, the dissent invokes emotional rhetoric, treats the childhood celebrity like an innocent “handicapped child”, with minimal, if any, consideration to his status as a public figure. Beyond the legal technicalities, the substance is interesting nonetheless. Majority got it right, in my humble opinion. https://decisions.scc-csc.ca/scc-csc/scc-csc/en/item/19046/index.do

Art of the Day: “Lost & Found”

I snapped this picture nearly 20 years ago as I was hiking through the woods with my best friend, and best dog ever, Winston 1 (our beautiful brindle bullmastiff). A heavy fog rolled in, and we got absolutely lost in the woods. We nearly walked off the ledge of a cliff. after two hours wandering through the woods, found our trail back. Hence, lost and found. It was a beautiful memorable experience, and this was the most glorious capture from the moment.

Interesting Ontario decision

This is an interesting Ontario decision, not so much because of questions of law, just as a [fact] pattern. Very similar to Nicolas Sandmann… someone posted a totally innocent video of her sister and boyfriend wrestling. A social media user grabs a screenshot, posts it alleging that the video was mocking George Floyd. Doxxes the people in the video. They get fired, lose job opportunities, harassed… Court awards $50,000 in damages. Does not award aggravated damages. Does not order public apology. https://www.canlii.org/en/on/onsc/doc/2021/2021onsc6661/2021onsc6661.html

Art of the Day - Frightened Rabbit, Scott Hutchison

The story behind the photo: Pre-pandemic world with freedom, I still didn't get out much. My best buddy invited me to see a small band called Frightened Rabbit at a local venue. A tiny venue where you could get so close to the band you could smell their sweat. You could feel their breath as the sang. I had never heard of Frightened Rabbit and had no expectations. Their music gave me goosebumps. I had brought my camera gear and took some pics. This once captured the mood, the beauty, and the tragedy. After the show, I hung around and talked with the band, with Scott Hutchison (the lead singer and person in the foreground of this pic). It was clear he had some internal struggles. I joked about becoming his agent I was so in love with their music. You meet people and you know they are destined for greatness. This band, Scott... They were destined for greatness. Scott committed suicide in 2018. The song they were playing in this pic was "Square 9". I have a personal connection to this song, so when I hear it, I hear more than the song and it still makes me cry. It's a glorious song.

I did an interview with CJN journalist Ellin Bessner about my recent run for office. I guess it’s as close to a hit piece as they can get with the answers I provided. Listen for the five minute intro framing, and the fact -check after the interview. It was fun. I especially love the suggestion that using the term “globalist” has anti-Semitic connotations. The statement itself is based on the anti-Semitic presupposition that Jews are behind Globalism. https://thecjn.ca/podcasts/why-this-jewish-youtube-star-ran-for-the-ppc-in-montreal/

Art of the Day - Cave Art

I don’t know why I decided to look up the oldest art for this art of the day, but I’m glad I did. This comes from La Ferrassie Cave in France. It dates from 70,000 to 40,000 BC. The picture on the left is the art. The picture on the right the cave in which it was found.

Apparently, the images are of a vulva. The oversimplified single line was commonly used to represent the vulva in prehistoric art. There is something so intriguing about the fact that not only did early man feel compelled to create art, but that the the female genetilia was the original inspiration. I guess it goes to show that the need to procreate was the inspiration throughout the history of humankind. Enjoy!

Read this “fact check”

If I weren’t suspicious before, this fact check has removed any doubt. https://apnews.com/article/fact-checking-818000433358 “While it’s true that there were more teen deaths in summer 2021 than summer 2020 in the U.K., it’s false to suggest the rise is due to the vaccines, Garrett said. Instead, there are many factors which may have contributed to a lower than usual number of deaths in summer 2020. For example, coroner investigations faced delays because of the coronavirus, and COVID-19 restrictions kept many teenagers in their homes that year.

“2020 is not a ‘normal’ year to compare with,” Garrett said.

City of God is a pretty great movie about life in the slums of Rio. Somewhat violent, but very well done. This was a scene that always stuck with me. A life lesson which, albeit oversimplified, seems to be an astute and timeless observation. The first time is the rule. The second time is the exception. The third time, the exception becomes the rule.
