My Gaza essay

"The clans of the Gaza Strip issue a joint statement condemning Hamas's violence against various families in Gaza, calling on it to "immediately end the state of security chaos." The clan leaders calls on all families in the Gaza Strip "to take a clear and responsible position on the ongoing situation and to reject this security chaos."

"Hamas' uses the same human shield tactics in its battles against rival Gazan groups. They slaughtered 25 members of Dagmoush family using ambulances as cover. They dressed a casualty in a "press" vest to pretend he's a journalist. But since it's Gazan vs Gazan, no one cares."

"Gaza militia commander says Hamas is a weak organization.

Recent battles with local clans revealed that Hamas fighters lack resources and training, the Khan Younis commander told Ynet.

It’s only a matter of time until Hamas is toppled, he says."

"A senior source in the Gaza Ministry of Interior told Al Jazeera: There are dead members from the security services (Hamas) in an attack carried out by an armed militia in Gaza City."

"The government held an “urgent” telephone vote a short while ago, Hebrew media reports, to approve last-minute changes to the list of Palestinian prisoners due to be released in exchange for the hostages in just a few hours.

According to Channel 12, two prisoners on the list were found to be ineligible for release — due to one of them already having been released and the other having ties to Fatah rather than Hamas. Instead, the ministers were asked to approve adding two Hamas-affiliated prisoners in their place, neither of whom is serving a life sentence.

Other changes were also made to the list of Gazans arrested since October 7 who did not take part in the attack and are thus eligible for release, the report says, including removing seven minors from the list and replacing them with seven other Gazans, including two women."

This part is interesting
"Brig.-Gen. Oren Solomon spoke on Wednesday at a ceremony commemorating the victims of the Nova music festival, referring to his team’s investigations into October 7 and accusing the IDF, under the command of former chief of staff Lt.-Gen. Herzi Halevi, of covering up the findings.

"Halevi called me into his office as part of the Nova investigations," he said. "I presented him with the draft report and told him that the investigation would not give the Israeli people the answers they deserve. I told him that the IDF is covering up the investigations, undermining public and commanders' trust."

Solomon added that he sent a letter to the then-IDF chief of staff with his comments regarding the investigation, and upon receiving it, Halevi ordered an investigation into him. The investigation, according to Solomon, "had no basis, exceeded authority, and was meant to neutralize me in the future."

"They succeeded in intimidating senior officers, but eventually everyone came forward," he continued. He also said investigators raided his home in front of all of his children, confiscated all media devices, and summoned him for questioning. Salomon recounted his experience on October 7, in which he and his son fought for ten hours. "My son left his ten-month-old daughter at home, and he is not even a combat soldier," he said.

"I led and commanded the Gaza Division's combat efforts during the most difficult hours. The same day, I asked to take a polygraph test, but they waited three months before letting me take it."
The investigation on Solomon was "tainted from start to finish by the military prosecution," he claimed. "You have no idea what kinds of questions they asked me. This is an attempt to neutralize a senior officer. This is a national scandal, an attempt at a cover-up.

I call on IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir. There is severe harm being done to IDF soldiers and a devastating blow to IDF commanders. Every officer in the IDF should know: do not tell the truth, especially if it harms the IDF. The IDF stands behind you in battle, but against you when you speak the truth."

"Over the past month, several key moderate Gulf states—Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Bahrain—have found themselves sidelined. While they support Trump's initiative to end the war, they are unhappy with the major concessions made to Qatar, still their regional rival and a supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamist movement that undermines Arab regimes. They are also uneasy about Washington's expanding defense agreements with Doha.

These states are expected to take part in Gaza's reconstruction, largely aligning with Israel's position. They back the full disarmament of Hamas and insist that the Palestinian Authority only return to Gaza after sweeping reforms and a process of deradicalization. They are already engaged in educational reforms, including religion studies, and promoting a shift in media discourse toward Israel and Jews. However, they are also demanding that Israel advance a political process toward a two-state solution. A Saudi diplomatic source told Israel Hayom that normalization with Israel remains on the table, but "it will not happen within months. It's a long road that requires seeing the agreement implemented in full, including Israel's commitments to the Palestinian Authority and serious negotiations toward a two-state solution. We will make sure the Palestinian Authority fulfills its obligations, but Israel, regardless of its coalition, must honor what Netanyahu agreed to."

Asked whether he believes the current Israeli coalition will promote a long-term arrangement with the Palestinians, the official said: "We've all heard the extremist ministers in this government. Netanyahu, or the next government, will have to decide whether they support extreme measures like annexation or genuinely want a real solution that will eventually bring calm." Regarding Qatar, the Saudi source was blunt: "It's a mistake to rely on Qatar, which backs the Muslim Brotherhood."

"Excessive Qatari involvement in the next stages of the plan and Gaza's reconstruction will cause Trump's plan to collapse," he warned. "Qatar's interests are different, it will undermine deradicalization efforts and try to ensure that Hamas remains in the picture and returns to power in the not-so-distant future."

Assuming the hostages' release wents smoothly, Israel is entering the next phase without much optimism. Many involved believe Hamas will refuse to give up its weapons, control of Gaza, or continued terrorism against Israel. Pessimism is also fueled by the militant statements of Hamas leaders, who are trying to salvage their image in the Arab and Palestinian world after the devastating destruction caused by the war in Gaza. Hamas' actions on the ground, such as the massacre of the Durmush clan, armed shows of force in the streets, and executions of alleged collaborators, reinforce this concern. Security sources confirm that in some areas under or near IDF control, Israeli forces have intervened to prevent Hamas revenge attacks, and several terrorists were killed in such incidents. Israel's political and military echelons are preparing for Hamas violations and the likelihood that it will insist on remaining armed, alongside the ongoing negotiations for the second phase. Officials in Jerusalem fear it will not be easy to convince Washington of the need to resume fighting against Hamas, even though the Americans have so far coordinated closely with Israel. This concern grew following Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi's event in Sharm el-Sheikh with President Trump, a gathering viewed as marking the formal end of the war.

Washington has sought to play down the significance of the Sharm summit, to which Israel was not invited. In discussions between the White House and the Prime Minister's Office, with Steve Witkoff also participating, US officials told Israel that the event was merely a ceremonial signing of the first stage of Trump's plan, serving as a foundation for the next phase. Behind the scenes, Jerusalem demanded clarifications from both Washington and Cairo and was assured that no substantive decisions would be made at the event. Still, US officials acknowledged that the event effectively signified the war's conclusion.

The summit has negatively affected Israel-Egypt relations, following harsh criticism in Israel over Egyptian involvement in weapons smuggling to Hamas. Nevertheless, the message emerging from Sharm el-Sheikh was also directed at Hamas: its time is up, and Gaza's reconstruction as part of a broader regional transformation will not include it. Optimistic officials say Hamas will eventually have no choice but to give in, as Israeli withdrawal and reconstruction under Trump's plan will not proceed until it relinquishes its weapons and control.

Meanwhile, the multinational force expected to take responsibility for Gaza and the international body meant to oversee the territory, together with a reformed Palestinian administration, have yet to be established. Both Israeli and American sources say the next phase will take many months and expressed concern that in the interim, military incidents could flare up again and spiral into a renewed conflict."

"The start of the Gaza ceasefire marks a turning point for Israel's security establishment. With guns largely silent in the south, Israeli defense officials are now redirecting their attention toward Iran and Yemen, where growing threats are expected to dominate Israel's national agenda in the coming weeks. While Gaza remains a concern, particularly the potential implementation of Phase B of the "Trump Deal", a full return to fighting there appears unlikely for now, partly due to assurances US President Donald Trump reportedly gave Qatar and Turkey guaranteeing the continuation of the truce..."

Here’s the Charlie Kirk piece.

It’s political philosophy to a beat.

He's back! But it will take a while to catch up on all that post in the meantime.

However, the operation was successful, even if I can't stand up straight quite yet. Four holes in my stomach, one about 3" long. And 3 weeks with a catheter in. Sigh. Ain't old age fun?!?

III.   CLOSING ARGUMENT: Free Speech Rights on Campus

  • State universities are state actors, and as such, they are subject to the restraints imposed by the Constitution and by concomitant state laws in many jurisdictions. We start with the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.
  • “Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech…or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” These three coequal protections cover each aspect of speech – speech itself; the assembly often necessary to effectuate speech; and the petitioning process required to make it meaningful in many instances. As related to the university, the first two predominate.
  • As I had reason to remind myself recently, many state laws go further. Take for example Tennessee Code 49-7-2405. Tennessee law reinforces students “right to free speech” enforced through institutions affording students “the broadest latitude to a speak any issue” with a specific prohibition that it “not to be suppressed because the ideas put forth are through by some or even by most members of the community to be offensive, immoral, indecent, disagreeable, radical or wrongheaded.” In other words, no so-called hate speech exception. In the organizational context, the law specifically prohibits an school to “deny student activity fee funding to a student organization based on the viewpoints” of that organization. The only prohibited conduct is harassment, defined as “unwelcome conduct directed toward a person that is discriminatory on a basis prohibited by federal, state or local law, and that is so severe, pervasive and objectively offensive that it effectively bars the victim’s access to an educational opportunity or benefit.”
  • The principal Supreme Court case on the subject derives from the SDS movement in the 1960 and 1970s on college campuses – the Students for a Democratic Society. As the Supreme Court reiterated: “the vigilant protection of constitutional freedoms is nowhere more vital than in the community of American schools.” Academic freedom is freedom of speech for students and the associational rights embodied therein with the right to peaceably assemble. Indeed, the right to organize on campus derives from the marriage of those three First Amendment freedoms forementioned – the freedom of association is “implicit in the freedoms of speech, assembly and petition.”
  • As the High Court held in Healy: “There can be no doubt that denial of official recognition, without justification, to college organizations burdens or abridges that associational right.”  As a disfavored “prior restraint” on student’s future speech, “a heavy burden rests on the college to demonstrate the appropriateness of the action” and that appropriateness is limited to “preventing disruption on campus” from violent conduct, not a heckler’s veto.
  • There is no place more essential to the exchange of ideas, robust debate, and the freedom of speech than a college campus in the very origination of ideas for many people during their intellectual coming of age. Protecting First Amendment freedoms for organizations like Turning Point USA thus remains essential to respecting the legacy of Charlie Kirk and enforcing the law of the land in our foundational formational documents of the very First Amendment in our rightly famed Bill of Rights.
