I used Grok to ask how Musk thinks the laws of physics allow for an AI center in space. Part of the answer is a "dawn-dusk 98 degree inclination orbit" that "precesses exactly ~1 degree/day". That orbit allows for almost, but not quite, 24/7 sunlight. I objected to Grok's use of the phrase "exactly ~1" as a self contradiction and wandered down a side track having nothing to do with AI data centers. I ended up getting Grok to compose a historical fiction of how humans decided to divide a circle into exactly 360 degrees. Here is what it did. I am amazed at how humorous the result is, although I think you have to be an engineer to appreciate it.

Title: “The Great Circle Debate” Ancient Babylon, ~1800 BCE. A mud-brick workshop under the stars. Four engineers are arguing over a large clay tablet while a scribe nervously takes notes.

Zababa-iddin (Chief Astronomer, very serious): The gods have given us the sky. The Sun completes one full circle among the stars in one year. We must honor this truth. I say we divide the great circle into 365 parts, one for each day the Sun travels. Simple. Truthful. Accurate.

Enlil-kudur (Master Builder and Surveyor, practical and impatient): Accurate? Ha! The heavens do not move exactly one 365th of the circle each night. After four years you’re already off by nearly a full day! You want us to keep patching the circle like a leaky canal?

Ashur-nadin (Theoretical Engineer, calm and philosophical): Why divide it at all? Let the full circle be simply 1. One complete turn. Unity. Pure. Elegant. Any fraction of a circle is then a clean decimal between 0 and 1. No arbitrary large numbers. No messy integers to argue over.

Enlil-kudur (raising an eyebrow): One? And how exactly do you instruct the masons to mark one-sixth of a circle using only “1”? Or one-quarter? Our scribes and builders only know how to divide cleanly by 60. That is the system the gods gave us for time, for angles, for weights. Everything.

Ashur-nadin (shrugs): Then let them divide by 60 if they must. But the fundamental unit remains 1.

Enlil-kudur: No. I propose 360. It is a clean multiple of our sacred 60 — 6 × 60. It fits our entire sexagesimal system perfectly.

And look how beautifully it divides! (drawing rapidly on the tablet) 360 ÷ 4 = 90 — a perfect right angle for temple corners. 360 ÷ 3 = 120, 360 ÷ 5 = 72, 360 ÷ 6 = 60… Every useful angle falls out as a clean integer. No fractions for the masons.

Sin-uballit (Young Mathematician, excited): You are all thinking like mortals. The true measure of a circle is the ratio of circumference to its diameter. Let the full circle be 2π parts. Then every angle is natural and elegant!

Enlil-kudur (laughing): Two π? The boy wants us to build ziggurats with a number that never ends. The priests will wait until the next flood for you to finish the plans in clay.

Zababa-iddin: At least 365 follows the Sun!

Enlil-kudur: It only pretends to. We all know the true year is closer to 365.25 — and it still drifts. Your “accurate” circle will require constant corrections. My 360 is honest. It honors our base-60 system and stays remarkably close to the stars’ motion. That is the best compromise we can make.

Ashur-nadin (nodding slowly, with a hint of resignation): …Perhaps 360 is acceptable. It keeps the purity of our 60 while giving us practical numbers. One full turn is still 1, but we subdivide it into 360 parts for the hands of men.

Enlil-kudur (smiling as he presses his cylinder seal on the tablet): Good. 360 it is. The stars get their near-match, our builders get clean numbers, and the gods get their 60. Everyone is only slightly unhappy.

Sin-uballit (muttering as he walks away): Barbarians… all of you.

Zababa-iddin (sighing): Just don’t blame me when the calendar drifts.

Epilogue: And so the circle was divided into 360 degrees — a very Babylonian compromise: practical for engineers, consistent with their base-60 system, and close enough to the heavens.

The Barnes Brief, Weekend of May 29, 2026

BRIEF

I. THE INTRODUCTION

A. Art of the Day
  • The Battle of Bunker Hill, by early American artist John Trumbull, a battle the British managed to lose while winning. By holding off the British as long as they did, the Americans seized the narrative and strategic victory. Legend grew of a young farmer turned Colonel of the Minute Men, promising to hold the Hill or periosh trying for at least one more night, with the famous phrase echoed: “Don’t Fire Boys Till You See the Whites of Their Eyes”, or at least legend would have it. I admit my fondness for the legend with its Sun Tsu style proverbial wisdom, but also for a more direct reason: Colonel Prescott was a great, great granddaddy of mine.
