(Third time posting because the first 2 didn’t seem to upload. I think there might be a problem with video on Locals today. So I can only post a picture for now :-)

What a day it has been!

We go to a local shelter to see what dogs they have available. Ethan and I went yesterday at five, but they closed at four.

We get there today at noon, and there is a lineup of cars down the street because there is some TikTok influencer who’s doing an event to raise money for the shelter.

We see the most beautiful majestic French bulldog mix with a Sharpei… Or a lion! Instantly fall in love.

We get a bit of a headache on Winston not being neutered. And his heartworm medication status.

I manage to get confirmation from our Florida vet that he is up-to-date on his heartworm.

Managed to get in touch with our old vet in Montreal who sends me email confirmation as to why Winston need not be neutered.

We take the kids for various day activities, then rush back with documentation before somebody else picks up this dog.

I take our oldest daughter so she can meet him and make sure the dog does not give her any allergy issues.

None whatsoever.

We then do the meet and greet with Winston. Winnie was putting on as much of a tough guy attitude as he can, before walking into the fence. 😂

We get the go ahead. Make the decision. And as we’re leaving, after filling out all the paperwork, they come back and tell us that we won’t be able to take ravioli (that’s his name for now, soon to be changed :-) because apparently he hasn’t been neutered. And he suffers from the same undescended testicle issue as Winston!

The next appointment for an ultrasound they have is Thursday, and they will neuter him at that time if he dies still gave his balls hidden in his abdomen, so we have have to wait a little bit before bringing him home.

Now we need to all agree on a name!

I have suggested Bonsai, Leo, and Rocky.

His moment of greatness

And it was quite literally his only moment of greatness in the three games! 😂

What’s incredible is how expensive everything has gotten, even the most traditional family outings.

Admittedly, we were five kids and two adults, but it was over $35 per person to play three games of bowling.

Then you have to rent the shoes.

And the food, if you order it, is overpriced junk.

But, we had a moment!

Dexter Taylor

I put this tweet out today. Let’s see if we can’t catch the eye of Kathy Hochul:

“A grotesque injustice, coupled with meaningful public pressure caused Democrat Governor @GovofCO to do the right thing and commute the egregious sentence of Tina Peters.

Can we get a similar remedy of justice from @GovKathyHochul for Dexter Taylor, who has now been rotting away in a New York prison for two years for the heinous crime of peacefully exercising his God-given 2nd Amendment rights?

Kathy, I know I have called you a “demon” for pushing the experimental Covid jab on 6-month old babies. I regret nothing.

You have an opportunity here for some form of vindication. We can get back to the Covid shot when Dexter is a free man.

And to refresh your memory: Judge Abena Darkeh in Dexter’s trial literally said “Do not bring the Second Amendment
into this courtroom. It doesn't exist here.
So you can't argue Second ...

Art of the Day

  • The cowboy hat on a country fence in the country. Americana defined. Independence. Freedom. Conviction. The best traits of America captured in the yeoman farmer of Jeffersonian lore. The echoes of a country song about love and loss, heartbreak and hope, a whisper of the future amidst the distress of the day. The sun ain’t set yet.

The Barnes Brief: Weekend of May 15, 2026
Art of the Day
  • With its signature clock, red brick walls, and wooden floor interiors, I remember well the chapel I first set to publicly speak as a 10-year old — Phillips Chapel, Highland Park, Chattanooga, Tennessee. Damaged a few years back by a fire, evangelicals founded the church in 1922 as part of the Indpendent Baptist movement I grew up in. MLK met with Reverend Lee Roberson here during the Civil Rights movement. My first moment on stage ended quickly, as I forgot my speech, panicked at the size of the crowd, and my little ten year old feet scampered across the wooden floors in fear of total embarrassment. Fond memories!
