I. INTRODUCTION
Two days in a row we visit our daughter who is hospitalized to receive her 4th course of chemo. Her 12 year old brother visits her both days, as he has monthly since her treatment began. We were told that he’s allowed to come because he is a sibling. Today, we bring subs, hoping to hang out with her through the afternoon and evening.
The front desk masked male secretary advises us that our son cannot visit as he is not 14. I respond by pointing out that he visited the 2 days prior. The guy says, the policy has changed because of the flu. I then ask when did the policy change? He says - 2-3 weeks ago. Then I point out again that he had just visited the 2 days before and that he’s a sibling. So then he says - “well, I’m just warning you that he won’t be allowed in” - to which I say - he’s been allowed to visit the last 2 days, we’ll see what happens.
We get up to the floor (realize a bit of a trek) - when we ask to be buzzed in - the secretary says “he can’t come is because he’s not 14” (Ah, so the guy called ahead!). There’s another woman with us waiting to get buzzed in who whispers to me - “ask to speak to the nursing supervisor” - so I do. They refuse to allow me to speak to the nursing supervisor. Meanwhile through another door - a hospital worker comes out and opens the door for us and says - “do you need to come in?” We had food for our daughter and I figured I could speak to them to work things out. So we go in and make our way over to her private room. We knock and she invites us in. 2 seconds later there’s an attendant at the door insisting that our son needs to leave (because you see if you’re 12 you’re just riddled with flu virus, but if you’re 14, then you’re all good!). I point out again that he visited the last 2 days. She ignores my comment and instead just repeats “he needs to leave”. I ask to speak to the nursing supervisor -she then says - “if I call the nursing supervisor, security will be called to escort you out”. I then say - “this is ridiculous - he was just here yesterday and now you need to escort us out!” I just get done saying that - but a bulletproof vested 6 foot security guard opens the door (without knocking) and gestures that we have to leave. My son begins to cry. We say goodbye to my daughter and as we enter the hall, 3 more bulletproof vested security guards meet us! Wow - I had no idea that we were such a threat! 4 huge men to escort the 2 of us - and they walked with us all the way out to the exit door! No one to speak to! No one to appeal to. Wow! Unbelievable!!!
You realize the power hunger of the insignificant petty bureaucrat - needing to wield his power as only he can! No wish for the betterment or a demonstration of kindness towards your fellow man. Nope - instead- how can I best squash whoever I come across - and if it’s a woman and child- all the better!
A small glimpse into the inhumane world ruled by petty bureaucrats who have no heart and no soul!
It reminded me of when I was an exchange student in the Soviet Union (1986). We entered the vestibule of an open restaurant hoping for some lunch - only to be unceremoniously kicked out because - (wait for it!) they were closed for lunch! A restaurant at lunch time!!!🤪
I did a quick hit on Richard Syrette yesterday. Gotta keep Canadians apprised of the U.S. madness.
