Art of the Day: Saturday, June 5, 2021

Facing the bottom of despair, his offices torched, his home ransacked then torched, and his community facing bankruptcy, with their property ransacked then torched, and too many friends and family dead, facing a legal system that conspired in and was complicit in the egregious acts, Buck Franklin's reaction was not to dwell in despondent despair, fell in understandable fright, or forfeit a fight to save the community under terminal threat. He got a tent, a desk, some law books, and he and his associate and secretary got to work. Ultimately, they wore down the system, and they gave back the property by finding the legal methods meant to strip them of it unconstitutional. As an underdog lawyer often facing apparent insurmountable odds, I always find this photo inspiring.

Trust The Experts And Vote For Me For Senate!

  • West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice (R) has vetoed legislation that would have loosened state vaccine policies. The bill would have allowed students who attend private or parochial schools to be exempt from vaccinations. (Associated Press)

  • “Our kids are our future,” Justice said in a letter explaining the veto. “They are our most important resource, and I will protect them with everything I have.”

  • The governor said “West Virginia is way ahead of the pack” in protecting children from preventable diseases like measles because of its school vaccine policy. He said he had to defer to the licensed medical professionals who “overwhelmingly” spoke out in opposition to the legislation.
