Why Robert Barnes and other strict Constitutionalists are critical of President Trump's unlawful and unconstitutional actions regarding his exclusive initiation of war against Iran.
The U.S. Constitution’s framers intentionally gave Congress the exclusive power to declare war (Article I, Section 8) to deliberately break from British tradition, where the monarch held the authority to wage war and drain the treasury. This, in part, addressed fears of an "imperial president" like the tyrant James I who could act without Parliament.
Key details regarding this decision:
Rejecting the Monarch: The Framers rejected the British model where the King held the power to declare war and command the military.
Legislative Control: By placing this power in Congress, they aimed to make initiating war harder, ensuring it was a collective, public, and deliberate decision rather than a unilateral executive action.
"Make" vs. "Declare": James Madison and others shifted the phrasing from "make" ...

I
remember vividly when Iran blew up our Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. It was October 23, 1983, and I was a newly trained second lieutenant C-141 pilot based at Charleston AFB, SC.
My wing put my crew and I immediately into “Alpha Alert” requiring the crew and aircraft to be airborne in an hour or less. We talked as a crew and we, to a man, knew we would fly to Beirut and bring our Marines home. In flag draped coffins.
We were crushed. We were devastated. A foreign government had killed 241 US personnel. It was a tremendously sad feeling. There was none of the usual crew banter and jokes as we preflighted the jet. It was quiet as we went to work. Deathly quiet.
I went to our command post to get our flight plan. The sun was just setting in Charleston. A colonel handed it to me and I took a quick glance. Mostly looking for our required fuel load and the flying time.
Wait. This ...
